The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will reopen the access road to Polihale State Park on Kauai's west side tomorrow at 8 a.m.

Reopening the popular beach park was made possible by a group of community volunteers who pitched in to help the state make needed repairs to road after it was damaged by December's heavy rains.

With state money unavailable for emergency repairs, the volunteers stepped up.

They provided skilled labor, equipment and materials to fix damage to the road and portions of the park's water system.

"We want to thank the people of Kauai, the large number of volunteer crew members, and others who provided monetary or food donations for the workers, for their phenomenal and good-spirited efforts for the good of the community," DLNR chair Laura H. Thielen said in a statement. "Due to their love for this beach park, community members devoted themselves to accomplish those repair tasks necessary to allow us to safely reopen as much of the park as possible."

Parks staff haven't yet estimated the actual value of the volunteers' efforts but it could be worth near $200,000.

"The volunteers had to bring in water for making concrete. They brought in generators to power the welders. They brought in excavators, cranes, bobcats, cement mixers, dump trucks, graders, and other equipment," said Thielen. "They even turned out to remove bulky trash and overgrown vegetation."
