The Contemporary Museum Cafe, in association with the Hawai'i Fashion Incubator, aka Hifi, is hosting a "Tea for Two and TCM: Mom and You" spring trunk show featuring six local designers handpicked for their appeal to both mothers and daughters. Here's the lineup:

  • Umee, Deena White's line of contemporary clothing in natural fibers with a subtle touch of the Pacific.

  • CLOTH, Micah Iaukea's collection of chic and classic vintage clothing; her vision of how to rescue, recycle and redefine fashion from decades past.

  • Zsuzsa B jewelry by Zsuzsa Bakonyi-Rodgers, artistic, individualized pieces using gold or sterling silver with spirit and an obvious zest for life.

  • Martinique by Kailua designer Jodi Salmonson, for the mom who loves to look chic while working, shopping or traveling. Sustainable silk chiffon and bamboo jersey are her latest carefree fabrics.

  • Sierra Dew of Maui combines her fashion education in Italy and her beachy upbringing to create a stunning line of sophisticated jewelry, handpainted leather handbags, and eco-friendly clothing.

  • Soozou creator Pia Kuhlemann, originally from Hamburg, Germany, now works with women who live in public housing projects in Kalihi Valley to create a line of bags made from used sails that come from boats that sailed in Island waters.

The show is on from 2 to 4 p.m. May 9, on the lawn outside the Cafe. Reservations for lunch or tea and dessert are highly recommended: 523-3362. Full disclosure: This event is being held in conjunction with my own "FabricActions" solo show of paintings and textile art in the TCM Cafe.

    CUT LOOSE SHOW

Cut Loose is a favorite line for Island women when they want to relax and, well, hang loose. The simple silhouettes and easy drape make it work for lots of figures and the fabrics are Hawai'i-friendly. Tapestries by Hauoli in Ala Moana Center is holding a trunk show of Cut Loose garments from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, tomorrow and Sunday.

    ALL SEW'D OUT

At the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, 11 senior fashion design students are completing last-minute preparations for their final show, which they're calling Sew'd Out. They'll be showing collections in three categories: Aloha Wear, Alice in Wonderland and Origami. Doors open at 11 a.m. Sunday, at the Pacific Beach Hotel. Tickets, $40, are available at 956-2244 or uhfashionshow@yahoo.com.

    HCC STUDENTS' 'MASQUERADE'

The fashion design students at Honolulu Community College are taking a different approach to their annual fashion show this year. In individual vignettes or mini-shows, each designer will focus on the look he or she wants to create, "unmasking" the new wave of Hawai'i designers.

The 14 graduating seniors will each share a personal vision by creating a stage set and coordinated design collection. Students will be competing for both set design and fashion design awards.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m., with lunch served at noon and the show at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 3, in the Sheraton Waikiki Molokai Ballroom. Tickets, $40, are available by mail or in person at the HCC campus, building 27. Information: Joy Nagaue, 845-9203.
