BERN, Switzerland (AP) — Jack Johnson scored two goals and the U.S. rallied twice for a 4-2 victory over Latvia in their opening World Championship match today.

Drew Stafford and Patrick O'Sullivan also scored for the sixth-ranked U.S. team, which outshot 11th-ranked Latvia 38-20. Robert Esche stopped 18 shots for the U.S.

Latvia took the lead 4:40 into the first period, when Herberts Vasiljevs scored nine seconds into a power play after Johnson was called for interference.

Johnson made up for his error by equalizing at 11:15. The 22-year-old left-hander's shot from beyond the circle got through a tangle of players and past goaltender Edgars Masalskis.

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Martins Karsums restored Latvia's lead at 6:29 of the second on a pass from behind the net.

The U.S. went back on top by scoring twice during a five-minute stretch on goals from Stafford and Johnson.

Stafford's shot from a tight angle on the right squeezed inside the near post, and Johnson emerged from behind the goal line to slip his shot across Masalskis.

O'Sullivan then scored at 6:03 of the third, collecting a rebound from Ron Hainsey's shot.

The U.S., which next plays Austria on Monday, had 22 players for the match after St. Louis Blues forwards David Backes and T.J. Oshie arrived on the eve of the 17-day tournament after being eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Montreal Canadiens forward Christopher Higgins and Yale goalie Alec Richards were added to the roster Friday but did not dress.

Later Saturday in Group C, third-ranked Sweden played No. 16 Austria on the same rink.
