University of Hawaii defensive end David Veikune today received news of his stroke of good fortunate at, of all places, a golf course.
Veikune said he was on the 13th hole when he received his dream call: the Cleveland Browns selected him in the second round, the 52nd player overall.
"It's a great feeling," Veikune said. "It's such a relief."
Veikune said his father became emotional. Veikune then received a kiss from his girlfriend.
"It's awesome," Veikune said.
Veikune said he was happy with the choice because his mother's family lives in Canton, Ohio.
"They'll be nearby," he said.
Veikune, who is 6 feet 2 3/8 and 257 pounds, played defensive end at UH, recording 18 career sacks. But, because of his size, he will play as a hybrid defensive end/linebacker for the Browns, who are switching to a 3-4 defense and in need of pass rushing help.
Veikune said he will report to the Browns' mini camp Thursday.
Veikune had a standout Senior Bowl, impressing scouts.
"He's a good player, a tweaner," said one NFL scout, who added that Veikune had a "great motor, quick, active, good movement and always working, working, working."
Veikune, who kept his mind off the draft by playing a round of golf today, was the Browns' third selection in the second round. Earlier, they took wide receivers Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi, fueling speculation they may still have a deal in the works for wide receiver Braylon Edwards.
The Browns made three trades in the first round before selecting California center Alex Mack at No. 21.
