Horse racing: Quality Road still questionable for Derby

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Quality Road's troubled feet could keep him out of the Kentucky Derby.

Trainer Jimmy Jerkens found a spot of blood on a newly patched quarter crack in the Florida Derby winner's right hind foot during a gallop on Belmont Park's training track Sunday morning.

Jerkens says the 3-year-old colt will have to come out of a five-furlong breeze "perfectly" Monday to get a trip to Churchill Downs for the May 2 Derby.

Hoof specialist Ian McKinlay worked on the foot early Sunday morning and said the horse was well on the mend but Jerkens cautioned that the horse has 24 hours to get better.

Quality Road became an early favorite for the Derby after edging Dunkirk in the Florida Derby on March 28.
