PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks placed shortstop Stephen Drew on the 15-day disabled list today with a strained left hamstring.

The club filled Drew's roster spot by purchasing the contract of utility infielder Josh Wilson from Triple-A Reno, where he hit .260 with a home run and 10 RBIs in 15 games.

Drew's move was retroactive to Saturday. Manager Bob Melvin said Drew will be able to take batting practice while he's on the DL.

"We'd like to think these 15 days will take care of that and he'll be 100 percent healthy when he comes back," Melvin said before the Diamondbacks hosted the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. "He'll swing the bat, probably a few days off, then do some things to keep himself ready, so once the 15 days are up he can come back fairly quickly and still be fairly sharp as far as his baseball skill set."

Drew is hitting .205 with one hit in his last 16 at-bats.

Drew has made one other trip to the disabled list; he was out from June 15-29, 2005, with a strained right hamstring.

Arizona also optioned left-hander Doug Slaten to Triple-A Reno and recalled right-hander Esmerling Vasquez.

Vasquez, on a major league roster for the first time, had a save and an 0.93 ERA in six relief appearances at Reno.
