There was time going for and against competitors at yesterday's O'ahu Interscholastic Association individual judo championships.

Taylor Ibera of Farrington was competing for her fourth straight title.

Moanalua's Brady Lafortune and Justin Osumi hoped their afternoon matches would end quickly so they could make the school prom.

Two months after dislocating her elbow, Kalani's Megan Yamaguchi wasn't even supposed to be competing, but there she was back on the mat, looking to defend her girls 122-pound title at Moanalua.

It all worked in their favor.

"I wasn't really thinking about this is my fourth title, I was thinking of taking it one match at a time," said Ibera, who defeated McKinley's Tryslynn Nakamoto by ippon (pin) in the girls 98 final that lasted 59 seconds.

Ibera was third at last weekend's USA Senior National Championships in California and is hoping to compete in the Junior World Championships in October.

"Her little movement dictate what your opponents are going to do and when you know what your opponents are going to do, everything comes easy," said Farrington coach Darren Reyes. "She's figured it out. It takes a person three to four years to figure it out, and she figured it out before she came to the ninth grade."

Moanalua's Lafortune, a junior, ended his boys 121 final against Roosevelt's Koan Kojima by ippon with 3:48 remaining. He won an OIA title at 108 as a freshman and at 114 last year. Preliminary rounds started in the morning and the championship matches were held late in the afternoon.

Osumi won the boys 145 final by ippon over Roosevelt's Nicholas Lum, winning his second straight 145 title in 41 seconds. Osumi won at 132 in 2007.

"They just work hard," said Moanalua coach Scott Pak. "They're relentless, they keep on attacking, they don't give up. They don't even get scored on, we've been trying to score first."

Kalani's Yamaguchi, who dislocated her right elbow in February's girls 120 wrestling final, spent a month watching her teammates from the sidelines. It only made her hungrier to return.

"My doctor said I was taking a risk for coming back and my coaches and parents and everybody else who was worried about me, tried to keep me from going too hard," Yamaguchi said after beating Kayleen Kobashigawa of McKinley to retain her 122 title.

Farrington's Logan Bucsit won the boys 114 final after winning at 108 last year.

"Last year's win made me feel like I had to pick it up," Bucsit said.

Roosevelt's Marisa Fukunaga won the girls 115 title, outlasting Pearl City's Kelly Ancheta. Fukunaga won at 109 last year. Pearl City's Jamilyn Chur won again at 154 and teammate Mei Ling Keiki retained her title at 172.

Other girls winners were Kahuku's Darian Auna (103), McKinley's Brittany Balanay (109), Castle's Stephanie Soon (129), Moanalua's Rachael Ostovich (139) and Waipahu's Keisha Marcelino (220).

Other boys winners yesterday were Moanalua's Ryan Shito (108), Mililani's Jordan Ogata (132), McKinley's Damon Hom (161), Moanalua's Branen Yamamoto (178), Kalani's Myer Alakoa (198), Kahuku's Hauoli Jamora (220) and Farrington's Keith Chargulaf (275).
