TEMPE, Ariz. — Former University of Hawaii defensive end Travis LaBoy was released today, along withrunning back Edgerrin James, by the Arizona Cardinals.
LaBoy played for UH from 2001-03 and was the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2003. He was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the second round in 2004.
In March 2008, LaBoy signed a five-year contract with the Cardinals with a guarantee of $7.5 million.
James, an all-pro running back while with the Indianapolis Colts, was released with one year remaining on his contract, a development expected since late in the season.
James had 794 carries for 2,895 yards and 16 touchdowns in his three seasons in Arizona. His resurgence during last season's playoffs gave Arizona the running game it needed.
James was benched for seven games during the season but came back to have a solid performance in the playoffs. He said late in the season that he expected the Cardinals to release him by mutual agreement.
The Cardinals also drafted 237-pound Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells in the first round in last weekend's NFL draft.
The team also announced that it released cornerback Rod Hood.
