The NFL may be taking its draft into prime time.
The Dallas Morning News reports that the league is considering moving the first round of the draft to Thursday night next year. The second and third rounds would be on Friday night and the final four rounds would be on Saturday.
"We'll talk to our teams about it," Commissioner Roger Goodell told the News. "We have to see what impact this would have on them. But I think it has potential."
After a first round that lasted more than six hours in 2007, the league shrank the time each team has to make a first-round pick to 10 minutes last year. This year, under the same time frame, the first round was completed in 3 hours, 23 minutes. That's perfect for prime time, Goodell said.
"We're more confident now, with the timing of the first round, that it can fit a 31/2-hour window," Goodell told the "News". "We think it can be very appealing from a fan's standpoint and an audience standpoint."
The league has floated the idea of holding the first round in prime time before.
It is unclear how teams will react to stretching the draft over three days.
Goodell said he enjoys the potential for the draft becoming more of a TV event.
"It's kids realizing their own dream," Goodell told the "News". "People are so infatuated with the reality aspect of it. Are their teams going to improve? Should they get a quarterback? Should they trade up? It combines so many great elements that people love to talk about."
