Hawaii Kai board approves resolution seeking ban on shark-feeding tours

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board last night approved a resolution calling for a statewide ban on shark-feeding tour operations.

The vote was 11-2, board chairman Greg Knudsen said in an email.

The resolution came in response to a proposal for a shark-feeding tour operation off Maunalua Bay.

The proposal was dropped after public outcry against the business.

The resolution says such operations "attract predatory sharks into ... coastal waters (and) increase safety risks to human activities in those waters."

The board urges the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, the Coast Guard and other federal enforcement agencies to enforce state laws prohibiting the feeding of sharks in Hawaii waters.
