Hawai'i's dairy cows produced 1.6 million pounds of milk in February, up 14 percent from the same month a year earlier, according to the local office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The NASS attributed the increase in part to "more favorable weather conditions" this year compared with last year. Milk production per cow rose to 1,100 pounds per month, up 49 percent from February 2008.

The state's dairy herd fell 21 percent to 1,500 head, due largely to the closure of Pacific Dairy in Wai'anae last year. One of the two commercially licensed dairies in the state — Island Dairy on the Big Island — said in February it was boosting its output to supply grocery stores on O'ahu that previously brought in all their milk from the Mainland.

Baghdad occupied the worst spot among the 215 cities surveyed, followed by six African cities. Other U.S. cities in the top 50 worldwide include San Francisco (30th), Boston (35th) and Portland, Ore.(42nd).
