Brushfire near townhomes apparently was no accident
A brushfire in Makakilo yesterday that officials believe was intentionally set came within 10 to 15 feet of townhomes, firefighters said.
The fire, which was reported at 11:25 a.m., came close to the townhomes but did not cause any damage. One resident was treated for difficulty breathing after trying to ward off the flames with a garden hose, said fire Capt. Terry Seelig.
The fire burned about one acre and was contained by 11:54 a.m., Seelig said. Residents reported seeing young adults in the area when the fire began.
"There didn't appear to be much of a clearing between the wild lands and the townhomes," Seelig said. "We usually recommend a clearing between homes and wild lands of 30 to 100 feet."
Wildfire season in Hawai'i runs from May to September, the dryer months.
