Bulldozing of preservation area brings state inquiry
The developer of a Hawai'i Kai condominium is under investigation after construction crews bulldozed into an area housing ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs and wetland.
KITV reported that the state Department of Land and Natural resources and attorney general's office are investigating. The developer may face fines for bulldozing part of the preservation area.
Developers of the Hale Alii condominium project plan to build 133 units in Hawai'i Kai.
Joe Brown, of Hale Alii Development, said his crews mistakenly encroached into a buffer zone around the preservation area. He says nothing significant was damaged, including petroglyphs.
State Sen. Clayton Hee says it's hard to assess damage to the petroglyphs because they're covered by the construction work.
