Hundreds of Beatles fans swarmed Abbey Road yesterday, singing and snarling traffic to mark 40 years since John, Paul, George and Ringo strode across the leafy north London street and into the history books in iconic pop photos.
The famous cover photo of the Fab Four's "Abbey Road," their last album recorded together, shows the bandmates walking purposefully across the zebra-striped asphalt.
Abbey Road, which cuts through London's well-to-do neighborhood of St. John's Wood, is home to the studio where the Beatles did much of their recording.
They shot the photo in August 1969 while recording for the album. Photographer Iain Macmillan stood on a stepladder and police held up traffic while the Beatles walked back and forth across the street.
JACKSON GIRL'S GODFATHER CLAIMS PATERNITY
A British tabloid reported yesterday that the godfather of Michael Jackson's three children claims to be the biological father of the singer's daughter Paris.
The News of the World quotes longtime Jackson friend Mark Lester as saying that he "gave Michael my sperm so that he could have kids — and I believe Paris is my daughter."
The newspaper also quotes Lester, a 51-year-old former child star known for his lead role in the 1968 movie version of the "Oliver!" musical, as saying he's willing to take a paternity test.
SINISE PLAYS CONCERT FOR DENVER PARK
"CSI: New York" co-star Gary Sinise headlined a free concert aimed at bringing attention to renovation efforts at Denver's nearly 100-year-old Civic Center Park.
Sinise says the recent renovation of Millennium Park in Chicago, where he's from, inspired him to play the concert yesterday for the nonprofit Civic Center Conservancy.
Sinise's Lt. Dan Band is named for the "Forrest Gump" movie character that earned Sinise an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor.
Local band Opie Gone Bad opened for the headline group.
ABC MAY SHIMMY UP TO PAULA ABDUL
ABC is joining the chorus of those seeking to hire Paula Abdul, who has quit "American Idol."
ABC programming chief Stephen McPherson told the Television Critics Association yesterday that he was "stunned" to hear she'd decided to leave the top-rated Fox series and that he's contacted Abdul, whom he called an old friend.
McPherson told Abdul he'd love to see her at ABC, perhaps on its hit "Dancing With the Stars."
