Sea Life Park has a new baby. Hi'iaka, a bottlenose dolphin, gave birth July 6 to healthy baby girl Waiohakaupo.

Weighing around 40 to 45 pounds and measuring 45 inches long, Waiohakaupo, which means joyous life and breath, has been at mom's side nursing on a regular schedule under the watch of proud park staff.

"Both mother and calf are doing well," said Jesus Bravo, general manager of Sea Life Park. "They are happy and everything suits them — their living conditions, the quantity and quality of food, and the love and attention of our staff."

Celebrating the birth with a Hawaiian blessing ceremony last week, Bravo said the park had kept the good news under wraps for a while to allow mom and baby their privacy. Visitors may now take a guided tour to see the baby.

The pregnancy was part of a breeding program instituted by Sea Life Park. "So far, the bond between Hi'iaka and her calf continues to strengthen," said curator Jeff Pawloski. Sea Life Park Hawaii has marine-life shows, exhibits and educational programs for all ages. It's open 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $29 ($19 for ages 3-11). Park activity fees include admission. www.sealifeparkhawaii.com.
