Give your plants a nice, deep soaking

Advertiser Staff

Did you know: Occasional deep soakings of lawns and garden beds are far better for plants than frequent light sprinklings — and conserve water in the long run. After watering, the soil should be moist down to four inches. Check by plunging a screwdriver into the ground. Keep sprinklers from irrigating paved areas, and water in the morning to reduce evaporation loss.

TELL US ABOUT SPECIAL SUMMER MOMENTS

Some things just go hand-in-hand with summer: mango season, graduation, camping trips and beach barbecues.

As the season draws to a close, we'd like to share our readers' favorite summer moments. Did Grandma finally share that secret family recipe? Did you have a sublime ocean experience, fall in love, pick lychee fresh from the tree?

Tell us in 50 words or less — what did you do and why was it so special? We also welcome photos, original prints or high-resolution digital images, which may appear in print or online. We'll publish our favorite stories and photos in an upcoming issue.

Send your name, age, phone number and address, along with your story and/or photo to: Summer Moments, Island Life, The Honolulu Advertiser, P.O. Box 3110, Honolulu, HI 96802; or e-mail it to zserrano@honoluluadvertiser.com with "Summer Moments" in the subject line.

Submissions may be edited and or archived by the Advertiser, and appear in print and online. Photo prints cannot be returned. The deadline is Aug. 28.
