Ticked-off talk about clock |
Defending State Women's Match Play champion Cyd Okino will play reigning State Women's Stroke Play champion Kacie Komoto this morning after both won first-round matches yesterday at rainy Oahu Country Club.
University of Hawai'i graduate Xyra Suyetsugu worked the longest to reach the second round, needing 22 holes to rally past Hee Sue Condry. Both golfers sank long putts on the final hole of regulation to extend the match.
Okino, a Punahou junior, also had to rally in her 2-and-1 victory after Nancy Shon birdied the first five holes. Komoto, a Punahou freshman, defeated Alice Kim, 5 and 4.
Other winners were Kaili Britos, Erin Matsuoka, Alina Ching, Allisen Corpuz and Nicole Sakamoto.
DUGAS TRIUMPHS
Eric Dugas coasted to a seven-stroke victory yesterday in the Aloha Section's Callaway Golf PGA Assistant Championship at Ko Olina Golf Club.
Dugas, from Kuki'o Golf & Beach Club, opened with a 6-under-par 66 Tuesday and followed with a 71. Pearl Country Club's Regan Lee (71—144) took second.
Dugas and Lee earned the section's two spots in the 2009 Callaway Golf PGA Assistant Championship, in October at the PGA Golf Club in Florida. Lee lost out on the second spot last year in a playoff.
Chris Koch (75—147) and Will Coelho (76—147) tied for third.
KO OLINA TEAM WINS
PGA Professional Travis Joerger teamed with Troy Higashiyama, Darrell Izumi and Bronson Maluenda, representing Ko Olina Golf Club, to post an 11-under-par 133 and win the Aloha Section PGA Team Championship Monday at Kahili Golf Course. The team earns a berth in the 2009 McGladrey Team National Championship.
The Ko Olina team won by three shots over two teams from Ka'anapali Golf Resort. Sutee Nitakorn and amateurs Marc Casperino, Jay Habel and Brody Long came in second through a match of cards. Ed Kageyama and amateurs Richard Armijo, Eric Emmel and Dillon Soldwisch were third. There were eight teams in the Section Championship.
The Ko Olina team will play against 40 other qualifiers Oct. 26 to 28 at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort in a best-ball championship managed by PGA of America. PGA Professionals and amateurs compete for a combined purse of $13,800 at the Section Championship and $200,000 at the National Championship.
