Carter re-signs with Nuggets

Associated Press

The Denver Nuggets, who lost Dahntay Jones and Linas Kleiza to free agency, have fulfilled one of coach George Karl's offseason wishes with the re-signing of backup point guard Anthony Carter.

Carter, a University of Hawai'i alum, has averaged 5.2 points, 4.1 assists and 2.2 rebounds over his 10-year NBA career with Miami, San Antonio, Minnesota and Denver.

In 150 games over the previous three seasons with the Nuggets, Carter has averaged 6.4 points and 5.1 rebounds. He averaged 4.7 assists in 22.9 minutes last season.

Nuggets executive Mark Warkentien said: "AC's loyalty to (owner) Stan Kroenke, George Karl and Denver is exemplary; rarely seen in professional athletics today."

PHELPS HAD A BEER, INVALID LICENSE

Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps was driving with an invalid, out-of-state license and told police he drank a beer about an hour and 15 minutes before he was involved in an accident, Baltimore police said yesterday.

The accident Thursday night was not Phelps' fault and was caused by another driver who ran a red light, police said.

Officers did not administer field sobriety tests because Phelps showed no signs of being impaired by alcohol, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. Police were aware of Phelps' 2004 conviction for drunken driving and did not give him special treatment, Guglielmi said.

The swimming star will be cited for driving without a license and failure to establish residency in Maryland, Guglielmi said. The citation carries no fine.

Phelps presented officers with a Michigan driver's license, according to the report, and investigators determined that the license was invalid after consulting with Michigan authorities.
