DETROIT— Matthew Stafford took his first snap as a pro and perfectly executed a play-action pass.

The problem: Keary Colbert dropped the ball.

Welcome to the Detroit Lions, kid.

Stafford threw a touchdown, an interception and had some passes dropped in his pro debut yesterday that Detroit rallied to win 27-26 over the Atlanta Falcons on Jason Hanson's 47-yard field goal as time expired.

"They're going to drop some balls just like I'm going to miss some," Stafford said. "I was excited. I felt like I had a good day."

Stafford, the No. 1 pick of the NFL's first 0-16 team, completed half of his 14 passes for 114 yards, with a 25-yard TD to fellow rookie Derrick Williams and an interception that Tony Gilbert returned for a score.

Meanwhile, Colbert dropped three of Stafford's passes.

"I feel like I could have made every one of those plays," Colbert said. "That would have made his day look better from the outside, but he had a good day anyway."

Daunte Culpepper started and completed 5 of 6 passes for 41 yards for Detroit.

Atlanta's Michael Turner ran for a 40-yard TD, and Matt Ryan was 5-of-7 for 33 yards.

Titans 27, Buccaneers 20: Kerry Collins was intercepted twice, while backup Vince Young threw for 131 yards and a touchdown, rallying host Tennessee past Tampa Bay. Tennessee's win spoiled the debut of new Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris.

Luke McCown got the start for Tampa Bay and struggled in a quarter against Tennessee's stingy defense. Byron Leftwich and rookie Josh Freeman weren't much better, with only Leftwich throwing a touchdown pass.

Tennessee had three sacks and two turnovers.

A pair of Titans rookies helped seal the victory. Javon Ringer, an All-American at Michigan State, ran 37 yards for a TD in the third period, and University of Hawai'i alum Ryan Mouton picked off Freeman's pass and ran it back 29 yards for a TD in the fourth.

The game started with a moment of silence for the late Steve McNair, the winningest quarterback in Titans history who was murdered July 4.

Bills 27, Bears 20: Jay Cutler came out throwing against host Buffalo in his Chicago preseason debut, missing as many attempts as he completed, not including the one he had intercepted. So much for the much-anticipated buzz — including all the No. 6 Bears jerseys sold — that centered on the Pro Bowl quarterback Chicago acquired in a blockbuster offseason trade with Denver.

The Bills' offense, even minus Terrell Owens, out nursing a sprained toe, was much more efficient. And Buffalo got plenty of help from its defense, which generated four turnovers, including two interceptions by rookie Ellis Lankster.

Packers 17, Browns 0: Aaron Rodgers directed two long touchdown drives before departing, and host Green Bay's new 3-4 defense gave Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson fits for Cleveland.

Quinn and Anderson got their first game action under new Browns coach Eric Mangini. Both could take some pointers from Rodgers, who went 5 of 10 for 102 yards and completed a 53-yard TD pass to Donald Driver on the opening drive.

Quinn was better than Anderson, though both threw interceptions. Cleveland committed four turnovers and seven penalties.

Texas 16, Chiefs 10: Chris Brown scored on a short run and Kris Brown kicked three field goals, lifting visiting Houston in a rain-soaked victory over Kansas City in the preseason opener for both.

Matt Cassel played only three series in his Chiefs debut and completed 2 of 3 passes for 15 yards. Houston starter Matt Schaub was a perfect 7 for 7 for 70 yards and engineered the game's only TD drive until Tyler Thigpen, the third Chiefs quarterback, connected with Brad Cottam on a 1-yard scoring toss with a little more than 5 minutes left.

Heavy rain fell most of the night.

Seahawks 20, Chargers 14: LaDainian Tomlinson got his wish — a handful of carries in August.

The San Diego Chargers' star running back played in an exhibition game for the first time since 2005, carrying four times for 10 yards and catching one pass from Philip Rivers for 8 yards in the Chargers' loss to visiting Seattle.

After two series, Tomlinson was back on the sideline, where he normally can be found during exhibition games.

The Seahawks, playing their first game under coach Jim Mora, took advantage of three straight turnovers by Chargers third-string quarterback Charlie Whitehurst in the second half to take control of what had been a ho-hum game.

Whitehurst threw two interceptions and lost a fumble, leading to 10 points for Seattle.
