Maui's Marzo wins pro surfing contest in Mexico

Clay Marzo of Maui won the Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido men's surfing contest today in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Marzo, 19, dominated the four-man final with a two-wave score of 17.5. Runner-up Junior Faria of Brazil had a two-wave score of 11.5.
Marzo received a score of 8.25 (out of 10) for his opening wave, then secured the win with a near-perfect 9.25 late in the heat.
"I was a little worried because it was a little mixed up out there," Marzo said. "I got that first score and was able to relax enough to get the other one."
Marzo received $7,000 for the victory. The contest was part of surfing's World Qualifying Series, which offers points toward qualifying for the 2010 ASP World Tour.
