Flynn Novak of O‘ahu’s North Shore won the Sponsor Me Hawai‘i men’s surfing contest today.

The final day of the two-day contest was run in 1- to 3-foot waves at Ala Moana Bowls.
Novak is more recognized as a stalwart in powerful North Shore waves, but this is the second consecutive year that he has won a contest at Bowls. He also won at Bowls last summer when the contest had a different title sponsor.
“That was too weird,” said Novak, 26. “I couldn’t even believe I made the finals. To win it again, geez, I can’t say anything right now. I can’t believe that happened.”
Novak clinched the victory early in the heat when he received a score of 8.25 (out of 10) for completing a series of difficult carving maneuvers. He finished with a two-wave total of 13.9.
Solomon Ortiz of the Big Island placed with a two-wave score of 13.65.
Dustin Cuizon of çEwa Beach was third with a two-wave total of 13.15. He had the best single wave of the heat with a 9.25, but could not get a quality second wave.
Roy Powers of Kauaçi was fourth.
Novak received $2,500 for the win. Novak and some of the other top finishers in the event are now in position to qualify for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.
