A pedestrian and bicyclist were killed in traffic accidents yesterday in 'Ewa Beach and Ka'a'awa, raising O'ahu's traffic death toll to 39.
Last year at this time, 31 people had died on O'ahu's roads.
In the first incident, police were looking for the driver of a van that struck and killed a woman crossing Fort Weaver Road in 'Ewa Beach early yesterday morning.
Police said a 68-year-old woman was in a crosswalk as she was crossing Fort Weaver Road near Makule Road when she was struck by the south-bound van about 5:30 a.m. The woman was taken in critical condition to The Queen's Medical Center, and later died.
The driver of the vehicle, described by police as an older model light-colored van, fled the scene. Police said the driver was a male, but gave no further description.
Police asked that anyone with information about the incident call HPD's Traffic Division at 529-3499.
In the second incident, a man riding a bicycle about a half-mile north of Kualoa Ranch was struck and killed by a vehicle on Kamehameha Highway about 5:40 p.m.
The rider of the bicycle, a man believed to be in his 20s, died at the scene, said city Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.
Police closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions while vehicular homicide officers conducted their investigation. Police reopened the highway at 9:40 p.m. One traveler reported counting several hundred Kahuku-bound vehicles backed up on the highway.
Earlier yesterday, another stretch of Kamehameha Highway, on the North Shore, was closed for about 3 1/2 hours after a stolen truck collided with a tractor-trailer about 8:30 a.m. near Hale'iwa.
