Tennis: Dementieva tops Sharapova for Rogers Cup
TORONTO — Elena Dementieva defeated Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3 today to win the Rogers Cup championship.
The fourth-seeded Dementieva broke Sharapova four times in a sloppy first set and cruised the rest of the way. It was the third win of the season for Dementieva, and her first since winning back-to-back titles in New Zealand and Australia in January.
Playing in her first final in more than a year, Sharapova struggled with her serve, committing 10 double faults in the match — nine in the first set.
It's the second straight year a Russian has won the Rogers Cup title, after Dinara Safina captured last year's championship in Montreal.
Dementieva takes home $350,000 for the victory, while Sharapova wins $175,000.
