Police chief’s plan: Sleep in Thursday morning

Honolulu Police Chief Boisse Correa ends his five-year-term as chief, and 39-year career with the department, at the close of business today.
Correa was presented with a certificate of honor by the City Council this morning and quickly realized that three of the current Council members were not even born yet when he joined the Police Department in 1970.
Today, HPD is “second to none” and has helped make Honolulu the safest big city in the country, Correa said.
He said he is looking forward to spending time with his father, Lawrence, who arrives next week from Missouri, where he lives on a farm with Correa’s sister and her family.
He said he is considering taking on a new career in public service or perhaps even politics or may work as a volunteer in a public service program.
His immediate plans are to sleep in Thursday morning.
“I don’t know if I can wake up late,” Correa said. “It’s gonna take a little while to de-institutionalize myself.”
The Honolulu Police Commission voted in May not to renew Correa’s contract. A citizen’s panel hopes to name a new chief some time in October.
