Emi Azeka of Maui has morphed her feminine, sophisticated "ladies who lunch" hats into sexy little cocktail chapeaux.

Azeka has been away from her millinery studio for five years as she recovered from back injuries. Now she has returned unabashed with her creative hats.

Inspired by her love for hula (she dances with kumu hula Gordean Bailey), she begins with all sorts of raw materials, such as vintage 1940s Filipino palm fedoras, Swarovski crystals, cactus, bone, 'opihi shells, feathers and silk flowers. She wraps and weaves them into little cocktail confections. Prices range from $150 to $1,000. SUMMER SIZZLES

Jewelry designer Lynda Caris of Muse IX Designs discovered some unusual beads during one of her many Mainland trips (how lucky to be a retired United Airlines employee): free-form glass that looks like mini-mosaics. These stunning beads took her off in a whole new direction. Muse IX's Summer Sizzles collection will be featured in a trunk show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow at Macy's Ala Moana. Caris will also show her Ocean Jewels Collection: necklaces of pearls, turquoise and other gemstones that are clearly ocean-inspired.

COLORFUL CARRY-ALLS CAN BE USED FOR CLASS, AROUND HOME

Leave it to an interior designer to find a pretty and practical way to cart around art supplies. Kathy Merrill Kelley of Merrill & Associates tucks her brushes, paints, graphite and pastels into a Milano Series Delightful bin and carts it off to art classes. When it’s not in use, it folds up nearly flat. She also uses the attractive, marine-grade nylon carry-alls to store magazines and other stuff around the house.
