LIHUE — A woman who nearly drowned yesterday at Anini Beach has been upgraded from critical to serious condition, a Kauai County spokeswoman said today.

The 22-year-old woman had been snorkeling near the boat ramp at Anini Beach at 3 p.m. when bystanders heard what they thought was a scream.
A vacationing police officer swam out and found her face down in the water. He brought her to shore and tried to resuscitate her. Hanalei firefighters and paramedics took over and performed advanced life support.
