JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi Valley State football coach Willie Totten has resigned.
The school announced the move Tuesday in a news release. The decision is effective immediately and Totten has been reassigned to other duties at the historically black university in Itta Bena.
A former Delta Devils quarterback who was best known for his record-setting connection with teammate Jerry Rice in the 1980s, Totten has been coach at MVSU since 2001. The team has struggled in recent years and finished 3-8 and last in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this year.
The news release says a nationwide search for Totten’s replacement will begin immediately and there is no timetable for a new hire.
