LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky freshman center DeMarcus Cousins' career is all of seven games old.
He's already a veteran when it comes to gamesmanship.
Minutes after putting up 24 points and 10 rebounds in the fifth-ranked Wildcats' easy 94-57 win over UNC Asheville last night, Cousins was asked about No. 10 North Carolina. The Tar Heels visit Rupp Arena on Saturday.
"I'm not impressed," Cousins said with a shrug of his shoulders.
It's a bit of freshman exuberance that makes coach John Calipari cringe. Considering the way the Wildcats (7-0) roared past the overmatched Bulldogs, Cousins could be forgiven for feeling a little giddy.
With star John Wall scoring 12 points and handing out a school freshman-record 14 assists, Kentucky matched its best start since 2004.
Despite all his bluster, Cousins knows the real season begins now. Games against the Tar Heels, No. 14 Connecticut and Indiana loom in the next two weeks.
"This is the time to see how good we are," Cousins said.
The Wildcats looked pretty good during their annual cameo at Freedom Hall, shooting 52 percent from the field while outrebounding the Bulldogs (0-6) 44-31 and outscoring them in the paint 50-16.
No. 8 Syracuse 92, Colgate 58: Wes Johnson scored 19 points, Andy Rautins hit three 3-pointers to help key an early surge and host Syracuse (7-0) beat Colgate (0-6). It was the 162nd meeting between the teams, and Syracuse leads 117-45, including 44 wins in a row. Johnson hit a pair of 3s and Rautins drained three more in the first 6:31.
No. 16 Georgetown 83, Mount St. Mary's 62: Greg Monroe scored a season-high 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, Chris Wright added a season-high 18 points and host Georgetown (5-0) beat Mount St. Mary's (3-3). Julian Vaughn added a career-high 14 points and matched his career best with eight rebounds and three blocks.
WAC MEN
Saint Mary's 78, San Jose State 71: Mickey McConnell led three Gaels players in double figures with 19 points and visiting Saint Mary's (5-1) rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to beat San Jose State (2-3). Wayne Hunter added 16 points, including consecutive 3-pointers that put Saint Mary's ahead to stay with 8:34 left. Omar Samhan had 12 points.
