A couple that nearly starved their 12-year-old daughter to death should spend the next 50 years behind bars for the “horrible and atrocious” crime, a prosecutor said this morning.
Family Court Judge Rhonda Nishimura sentenced the pair, Melvin and Denise Wright, to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Deputy Prosecutor Maurice Arrisgado said he will ask that the Hawaii Paroling Authority wait 50 years before considering parole for them.
The child weighed 29 pounds and was near death before the Wrights sought emergency medical care for her in 2007.
The Wrights were convicted of attempted second-degree murder in a Family Court jury trial earlier this year.
The girl, permanently brain damaged by her mistreatment, is now living with her grandparents in South Carolina.
