The Logan ran aground at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday about 25 yards offshore in the Point Panic area, said Deborah Ward, spokeswoman for the Department of Land and Natural Resources. Ward said the boat was freed early this morning during high tide.
The boat was towed to Keehi Marine Center for repairs after the grounding punched a small hole through its hull, Ward said.
“It’s too early to tell if there was any damage to the reef where it went aground,” Ward said. “Our marine biologist is scheduled to inspect the area today, if possible.”
It is not known yet if the vessel’s owner will face any fines or other penalties as a result of the grounding.
The Logan's owner said he had just unloaded his catch at Pier 38 and was returning to Kewalo Basin when the boat went aground.
As the vessel was coming into the harbor, the owner said it developed rudder problems and he was unable to steer the boat, Ward said. DLNR, the Coast Guard and other officials were sent to monitor the situation.
About 600 gallons of diesel fuel were removed from the vessel yesterday afternoon.
Ward said the owner hired a private salvage company to free the boat.
