Waimea Bay waves not big enough for Eddie Aikau surfing contest

Advertiser Staff

The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau big-wave surfing contest has been postponed for today.

Waves were not quite big enough at Waimea Bay this morning for contest director George Downing to start the prestigious event.

Wave-face heights need to be at least 40 feet and consistent at Waimea Bay for the contest to run. Wave-face heights were around 30 to 35 feet this morning.

Because of the strict standards, the contest has been completed just seven times in its previous 24-year history.

The last time the event ran was December 2004, when Kauai's Burce Irons won it.

Waves are expected to rise throughout today and tomorrow, so the contest will try to run again tomorrow.
