Waikiki-Diamond Head shoreline fishing area reopening next year

Associated Press

The state is reopening a popular fishing site on Oahu.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources announced Tuesday that the Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area will be open from Jan. 1 through the end of 2010.
The area covers the ocean from the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium to the Diamond Head Lighthouse and about 500 yards out to sea.
The nearshore area that is closed this year has been managed for public fishing since 1978.
The department says permitted fishing methods include pole-and-line, thrownet and hand harvest. Spear fishing will be allowed only during daylight hours.
