Rainbow Warriors rally to thwart upset-minded Chaminade, 70-61

The University of Hawai'i men’s basketball team rallied to defeat its NCAA Division II neighbor Chaminade, 70-61, tonight.
A crowd of 2,314 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched the Rainbow Warriors improve to 4-4 with their second consecutive victory.
Chaminade dropped to 1-4, with all four losses to NCAA-I teams.
The ’Bows trailed for the first 36 minutes, including a 13-point deficit at halftime.
Hawaiçi did not take the lead until 3:55 remained in the game.
Roderick Flemings scored all 18 of his points in the second half to lead the ’Bows. Hiram Thompson added 17, and Adhar Mayen 12.
The Silverswords raced to a 9-2 lead to start the game, and went on to drain nine 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 38-25 lead at intermission. Shane Hanson hit four 3s, including a 24-footer just before the halftime.
The ’Bows used a smaller lineup to start the second half, with guards Thompson, Dwain Williams and Jeremy Lay alongside forwards Flemings and Mayen.
The move helped Hawai'i cut the Chaminade lead to 46-43 with 11:27 remaining.
The ’Bows finally caught Chaminade at 60-59 with 3:55 remaining on two free throws by Mayen.
A technical foul on Chaminade’s Hanson for slamming the basketball proved costly. Hawai'i’s Thompson made the ensuing two free throws to cut the Chaminade lead to 59-58. The ’Bows then took the lead moments later.
Hawai'i played without starting forward Petras Balocka, who sat out with an ankle injury.
Hanson led Chaminade with 18 points, and Steven Bennett added 15 points and eight assists.
