Cacao Festival set for Jan. 31 at Hale'iwa Farmers' Market
The Hale'iwa Farmers' Market celebrates locally produced foods with periodic festivals and the next one is already planned: The Hawai'i Cacao Festival, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Market site, Kamehameha Highway (SR 83) at Leong Bypass near Hale'iwa Beach Park.
Admission is free and includes a tour, via shuttle bus, of cacao orchards nearby. Also scheduled: a chocolate recipe contest (awards for baked goods, confections, savory recipes, keiki creations and grand prize), chef demonstrations, children's activities, visits from celebrities Howard Dicus and cookie maker and literacy advocate Wally Amos, plus freelance food writer Martha Cheng of ShareYourTable.com and chocolatier Melanie Boudar.
The Urban Garden Center will be selling cacao trees for planting in your own yard and there will be demonstrations on making chocolate liquor. Author Wanda Adams of The Honolulu Advertiser will be on hand to sign her cookbooks.
