90 tickets issued in Moiliili during pedestrian-safety campaign
Honolulu police officers handed out about 90 tickets this morning during a 90-minute traffic enforcement program near the former Star Market in Moiliili.
Plainclothes officers from the Traffic Division took turns walking across busy King Street in a crosswalk at the corner of Coolidge Street, noting which drivers did or did not yield the right of may.
The plainclothes officers worked with a spotter who relayed information to uniformed police officers on motorcycles about a block down from the crosswalk.
The “solo-bike” officers pulled over the offending drivers and handed out 45 tickets for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian, 15 for drivers caught using cell phones, 14 for failing to buckle up, 12 for miscellaneous infractions and one to an elderly woman who jaywalked across King Street right in front of the officers.
Police were joined in the safety effort by officials from the state Department of Transportation, community members and Hawaii Walk Wise volunteers, a federally funded community group that promotes pedestrian safety.
