Farrington girls rally past McKinley

Nursing a tender right knee but suiting up "just in case," Farrington's Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo came off the bench and scored a team-high 14 points last night to help the Governors rally past McKinley, 75-52, in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball opener for both teams.
A sparse crowd at McKinley's Student Council Gym watched the defending league champ Governors spot the Tigers a 17-8 lead early in the second period before Tatupu-Leopoldo scored five points to spark a 15-0 run that put Farrington ahead for good.
Tatupu-Leopoldo, a 5-foot-9 junior who was an Advertiser All-State first-team selection last season, suffered from tendinitis in her right knee and sat out the Govs' last three non-league games.
"My knee was still a little sore, but I felt I could handle because I miss playing," she said after last night's game. "I felt I had to step in and be a leader. I thought I had to help the team, because we were playing pretty bad."
With Tatupu-Leopoldo on the bench, McKinley jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the game's first six minutes, then extended it to 17-8 on Jackie Tihano's 3-pointer to start the second quarter.
But Farrington answered with Kirsten Marie Liana's layup and a putback and two free throws by Sofia Folaumahina. Tatupu-Leopoldo then drained a 3-pointer from the left wing to put the Governors up, 19-17, and then she sank two free throws to make it 21-17 with 4:58 remaining in the half.
"With her in there, it changes the game," Tigers coach Abel Werner said. "If you play a zone, she hits the 3s, and if you play man, you gotta think about double(-teaming) her. It gets a little crazy when she's on the court."
McKinley finally broke the string on Kylie Sato's two free throws with 3:59 left, but Farrington finished the half with a 9-5 run to take a 32-24 lead into the locker room.
The Govs then began the second half with an 8-0 run and the Tigers got no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu said she had hoped to rest Tatupu-Leopoldo (her niece), but the Governors' slow start prompted the substitution late in the first period.
"Our girls weren't focused at the beginning, and with or without Brydgette, we needed to change that," Tatupu said. "We were trying to rest her as much as possible, we weren't anticipating using her. But that (early deficit) was a good time to put her in."
Folaumahina added 13 points for Farrington, and Liana and Dianna Prescott contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.
McKinley's Sato finished with a game-high 21 points.
