A motorcyclist was killed and five people were injured — one critically — when a motorcycle struck a car broadside last night in 'Aiea.
Police said the 23-year-old motorcyclist may have been speeding on Hälawa Heights Road when he entered the intersection at 'Iwa'iwa Street shortly before 6:30 p.m. and the bike struck a four-door station wagon driven by a 16-year-old girl.
Lt. Darren Izumo of the Honolulu Police Department said the motorcycle hit the rear door on the driver's side of the car, where a 13-year-old boy was sitting.
The impact drove the car off the road and onto the sidewalk. Nearby last night, a motorcycle helmet sat in the road and the crumpled motorcycle lay in the intersection awaiting transport.
The motorcyclist was taken to a local trauma center where he was pronounced dead, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's Emergency Services Department. The boy was taken to a trauma center in critical condition, he said.
There were five other people in the car. Four of them — the driver and three children — were also injured in the crash.
A boy under the age of 10 and a teenage girl went to the trauma center in serious condition, Cheplic said.
Two other children in the car were taken to a hospital; their condition was not known.
Police said there was also another passenger in the car, an adult sitting in the front right passenger seat.
Izumo said the motorcycle was traveling mauka on Hälawa Heights Road and the car was coming from the right on 'Iwa'iwa Street when the accident occurred.
Residents said speeding on Hälawa Heights Road is common.
The speed limit there is 30 mph. The roads were clear and dry when the accident occurred.
Both streets were closed while police investigated.
