Big Island brushfire 95 percent contained
A brushfire that started on Thursday in South Kona and burned more than 1,500 acres was about 95 percent contained Sunday night, Big Island firefighters said.
The fire was reported at 1:42 p.m. Thursday at the 4,000-foot elevation of Hokukano Ranch near Konawaena High School, Big Island Fire Battalion Chief Marshall Luke said.
No homes are threatened and no one has been injured.
"It's a large forested area," Luke said. "We began trying to confine the fire on Thursday evening and built up fire breaks around the fire by late Friday."
Four firefighters planned to work overnight on hot spots and firefighters planned to reassess the situation this morning, Luke said.
