Honolulu police chief asks public to report fireworks law violators

Honolulu Police Chief Louis Kealoha is asking the public to report fireworks law violators.
In a statement posted today on the Honolulu Police Department’s Web site, Kealoha says police have seen an increase in fireworks-related complaints involving exceptionally loud explosives that rattle homes and frighten pets.
“At this time, the Honolulu Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in catching fireworks violators,” Kealoha says. “Enforcement of the fireworks laws is difficult, and we need everyone’s help. We are encouraging persons who observe anyone selling, possessing, or setting off illegal fireworks to call 9-1-1 and meet with an officer.
“Officers are currently being sent to investigate violations, but the suspect or suspects are frequently gone by the time the officers arrive. When officers do not personally witness violations, they must rely on witness statements. Unfortunately, the witnesses, usually neighbors, are extremely reluctant to identify the perpetrators and provide a statement. This is where we need the public’s help.”
