A man driving a stolen truck died this morning after the vehicle crashed on Hakimo Road, about a mile up from Farrington Highway.

Honolulu police Lt. Darren Izumo said the man was in critical condition when he was taken to Hawaii Medical Center West, where he died.

The spectacular crash occurred about 7:10 this morning.

Izumo said the driver of the truck and a male passenger were headed toward Farrington Highway when they passed a car headed in the opposite direction that was being driven by the owner of the truck.

Izumo said the driver of the car apparently shouted at the truck and then tried to make a U-turn to pursue it. At that point the driver of the truck sped up.

Neighbors said they heard high revving of an engine followed by a huge crash.

Izumo said the truck, traveling at high speed, crashed into a fire hydrant, then hit a guy wire to a utility pole and then a rock wall. The truck apparently went airborne and flipped before landing, wheels down, on Hakimo Road.

The driver and passenger were taken to Hawaii Medical Center West. The passenger was in serious condition.

A portion of Hakimo Road remained closed through the morning while police investigated. Neighbors said they were without power, water and cable television.
