HA'ENA — Kaua'i County firefighters this afternoon airlifted a 35-year-old female visitor who was ill and unable to hike out of Kalalau Valley on her own.

She is in stable condition at Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital, the county said in a news release.

The woman and her husband had been camping in Kalalau for 10 days and became ill after drinking stream water, the county said.

The husband escorted his wife to the helicopter landing zone in the valley and then hiked approximately 11 miles to the trailhead.

He called police dispatch about 2:07 p.m. today and reported that his wife was sick and needed help getting out of the valley.

Air-1 and two rescue specialists from the Lihu'e fire station responded to the call.

They picked up the woman at the landing zone and brought her to the Waimea Canyon School Park. From there firefighters from the Waimea fire station escorted her to Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital.
