No one was injured in a fire intentionally set at Mililani High's softball scorekeeper shed that caused an estimated $45,000 in damage, according to a Honolulu Fire Department press release.
The fire happened Tuesday at 12:05 a.m. and was extinguished by 12:30 a.m. Fire investigators put the damage at $30,000 to the wooden structure and $15,000 to the contents that were stored on the bottom floor of the two-story structure behind the backstop of the softball field. Results of HFD's investigation were turned over to police.
Mililani athletic director Glenn Nitta said the damage will not affect practice or games at the field. Among the contents lost in the fire were softball pitching machines, catcher's gear, batting helmets and gloves. He said most players have their own equipment, such as gloves and bats. The batting helmets, required in games, will be replaced, but won't have any immediate impact because tryouts start Monday. Nitta said the school is still determining whether it can rebuild the structure.
Two engines and a Battalion Chief were called to the fire, the HFD release said. Nitta added it was the second fire at the school. Earlier the previous evening, the fire department responded to a fire at a recycling bin at the school's upper parking lot.
