Man killed in Wai'anae truck crash identified

Advertiser Staff

The driver of a stolen truck who died after crashing the vehicle Thursday has been identified as Kaulana Nordin of Wai'anae.

Police said Nordin was driving a 1995 Nissan pickup truck on Hakimo Road when he lost control of the vehicle about 7:20 a.m. The truck hit a fire hydrant, a utility pole guy wire and rock wall before coming to a stop in the middle of the road.

Nordin was taken to Hawaii Medical Center West, where he was pronounced dead. A 41-year-old male passenger was taken to that hospital in critical condition, but was upgraded to serious condition.

Police said the truck was reported stolen and that Nordin was fleeing from the owner when the crash occurred. Excessive speed was a factor in the crash, police said.

Nordin was convicted in February 2008 on two drug-related charges and one for breaking into a motorized vehicle. He was sentenced to four months in prison and placed on five years probation, according to data from the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center.

Wednesday's fatality was the ninth on O'ahu this year, compared to six during the same period in 2008.
