Kauai trout season will run June to September
Advertiser Staff
Rainbow trout fishing season on Kaua'i runs from June 1 to Sept. 30 at Koke'e Public Fishing Area, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources announced.
Anglers may fish daily during daylight hours during the open season. Pu'u Lua Reservoir is stocked with more than 20,000 trout, which should average 1 pound by opening day, the department said in a release.
Last year, about 2,500 anglers caught more than 6,000 trout that averaged 11 inches in length and 11 ounces. The largest trout caught was reportedly about 20 inches long and weighed 5 pounds.
Required Hawai'i freshwater game fishing licenses are for sale at DLNR offices, at selected fishing supply stores, licensed agents, or online at www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar.
The daily bag limit is 10 rainbow trout per licensed angler. Only one pole and line per angler and one baited hook per line is allowed. Complete trout fishing rules are in Chapter 13-64, Hawai'i Administrative Rules, and can be found on the DLNR Web site listed above, or by calling any Division of Aquatic Resources office.
A four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended for driving to all main fishing areas, including Pu'u Lua Reservoir, the streams and the ditch systems. All anglers are required to check in and out at established check-in stations as follows:
• For Pu'u Lua Reservoir, at the parking area or the reservoir intake.
• For Koke'e streams and ditches via Camp Ten and Halemanu roads, at the Koke'e Park headquarters.
• For the lower ditch systems, at Trail 2.
