Mililani boys take over first in OIA Red West

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

'EWA BEACH — Mililani's youthful boys basketball team appears to be coming of age at just the right time.

The Trojans, with only four seniors, moved into first place in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference Western Division last night by rallying past Campbell, 67-60. Mililani improved to 9-2 and can clinch a share of the West title with a victory at Waipahu (1-9) on Tuesday.

Campbell, ranked No. 8 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, fell to 8-2 and into a second-place tie with Radford (also 8-2).

"This was a good win for us, our team got hot at the right time," said Mililani forward Hassan Richardson, who scored 10 of his 15 points in the pivotal fourth period. "We executed when we had to, we didn't take bad shots. We just played good, smart basketball."

The Sabers appeared to take control with an 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter that put them up, 56-51, after Zachary Manuel's layup with 4:51 remaining. But Richardson answered with back-to-back layups and Bo Keto gave the Trojans the lead for good at 61-60 on a layup with 2:55 left.

Campbell was held scoreless in the final 3:04.

"We turned the ball over way too much," said Zaricke Jackson, the Sabers' first-year coach. "Most of it came when we were pushing the ball up the floor out of control. We needed to show some discipline. When we showed patience and ran our offense, we were able to score easy baskets. But when we were just running around crazy, that's when we made the turnovers."

Trojans coach Ed Gonzales said his young team has grown much in the past month, and it now has big victories over Radford (69-62 on Thursday) and Campbell to prove it.

"It shows their character when they can pull out a tough one on the road like this," Gonzales said.

Nick Demusis led Mililani with 16 points and Keto added 10 points. Manuel led the Sabers with a game-high 18 points, Patrick Ward added 15 points and Christian Manuel contributed 13 points.
