VAL D'ISERE, France — Lindsey Vonn had surgery on her right thumb today, but is expected to be ready for her next race at the world championships.

Vonn, who needed four stitches after cutting herself on a champagne bottle while celebrating her victory in Monday's downhill, was taken to Innsbruck, Austria, where a hand specialist performed the surgery, U.S. women's coach Jim Tracy said.

The coach added that Vonn should return to Val d'Isere either late today or Wednesday — and should be fit to race in Thursday's giant slalom.

After Vonn cut her thumb, U.S. Ski Team doctor Jeff Harrison applied the stitches at the team hotel.

She was hurt when she grabbed a broken bottle of champagne.

"I really think I'm safer skiing downhill at 85 mph," Vonn said Monday. "I'm in a little bit of pain, but this shouldn't slow me down."

Vonn was already likely to skip the team event Wednesday. Her next event is the giant slalom, followed by Saturday's slalom.

Vonn also won the super-G that opened the championships, and her downhill victory meant she joined Anja Paerson and Swiss skier Maria Walliser as the only women to sweep the speed races at a world championship.
