COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil — Former Spain Davis Cup captain Emilio Sanchez Vicario was picked to reinvigorate tennis in Brazil, which only has two players ranked in the top 100.
Sanchez Vicario, who led Spain to the Davis Cup title against Argentina last year without top-ranked Rafael Nadal, reached a deal with the Brazilian tennis confederation on Monday. He will oversee a project to find new talent and organize the structure of the sport.
"The project will focus on high level in all spheres of the confederation, from youths to professionals," said Sanchez Vicario, a former player who won 15 singles and 50 doubles titles. "I chose Brazil because it has a very large base to work with."
Brazil's ranked players include No. 84 Thomaz Bellucci and No. 91 Daniel Marcos. Gustavo Kuerten, a three-time French Open champion who retired last year, was the only Brazilian to reach No. 1.
There are no women ranked in the top 100.
