The Kaua'i Fire Department will receive a $1.6 million federal grant for the hiring of firefighters and for retention of volunteer firefighters, U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye's office said in a news release.

The grant is from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Fire Administration.

"It is important that we provide our firefighters with the necessary resources to hire and retain personnel capable of responding to emergencies," the senator said.
