Nevada edges UH in men's hoops

Advertiser Staff

Armon Johnson's short jumper with 7.6 seconds remaining lifted Nevada to a 47-46 victory over the University of Hawaii men's basketball team tonight.

Johnson's spinning drive into the lane capped a late Wolf Pack rally.

The Rainbow Warriors had a seven-point lead with 2:15 remaining in the game.

A crowd of 4,475 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched Hawaii drop to 12-12 overall and 4-8 in the Western Athletic Conference.

The Wolf Pack improved to 15-10 and 8-4.

Bill Amis and Roderick Flemings led the 'Bows with 10 points each.

Johnson scored a game-high 25 points for Nevada.

The Wolf Pack won despite going more than eight minutes without scoring during a key stretch late in the game.

However, Nevada closed the game with an 8-0 run. Hawaii's Hiram Thompson missed a driving shot in the closing seconds.

The game was tied at 14 with 8:20 remaining in the first half, then the 'Bows went on a 10-1 run to take a 24-15 lead with 4:30 remaining.

Flemings had the highlight of the surge with one of the highlights of the season — a one-handed dunk off a miss by teammate Lasha Parghalava. Flemings' head appeared to be at the level of the rim as he soared in for the dunk.

Hawaii eventually took a 27-24 lead at intermission.

The Wolf Pack closed the first half with a 9-3 run, then opened the second half with an 11-0 burst to take a 35-27 lead.

Amis scored six consecutive points to get the 'Bows back in it, and Hawaii regained the lead at 40-39 on two free throws by Thompson with 9:04 remaining.

The 'Bows increased their lead to 46-39 with 2:46 remaining before the Wolf Pack staged its late-game rally.

Hawaii's next game will be on the road at Fresno State on Thursday. That game will be televised nationally on ESPN2. The 'Bows will return for a home game on Saturday when they host UC Irvine in a non-conference game.
