Warriors clinch a state berth
Advertiser Staff
Sophomore forward Micah Christenson scored a game-high 25 points, grabbed five rebounds, made three steals and had two assists last night as Kamehameha defeated Saint Louis, 70-57, in Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball action.
A home crowd of about 750 at Kekuhaupi'o Gym watched the Warriors — ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improve to 9-1 in ILH play and secure a state tournament berth with two regular-season games remaining.
No. 7 Saint Louis fell to 5-4.
"We knew Saint Louis would be coming at us hard because they already beat 'Iolani and Punahou and were looking for their third upset," Christenson said. "Every game in this league is tough."
Brandon Dumlao scored on a runner in the lane to put Kamehameha up 13-12 at the end of the first period and the Warriors never trailed again.
Christenson scored 13 points in the second quarter, including back-to-back 3-pointers to start the period, as Kamehameha took a 32-26 lead at halftime.
He then added 10 more points as the Warriors expanded the lead to 50-33 late in the third period.
The Crusaders could only get as close as 63-53 after Dean Viena's 3-pointer with 1:47 remaining in the game.
Chaz Bajet added 17 points, including eight in the first quarter, and Blake Viena contributed 11 points for Kamehameha. Dean Viena led the Crusaders with 20 points.
